Lettering is a vital part of vintage sign design. The lettering has to be bold and easy to read. If it's not, then the sign is useless. There are many different styles and rules to follow. Some of the styles may date back centuries, but most of them are still very useful today.

The use of ornate, vintage-style lettering to enhance the presentation of a piece of work is not a new concept. In fact, it was quite common in the early days of printing and typography. Vintage lettering can be seen on everything from posters to book covers to advertisements. One of the most common applications is using it as a title treatment on books and magazines and as monograms.

The design of vintage letters tends to be characterized by elements that are very different from the average, modern letter, such as decorative flourishes and ornate typography.
