Use your own design!

- and get exactly what you want! -

Who doesn't like to get exactly what they want these days? Here at SpecTats, we believe in everyone's ability and rights for self-expressionism. Despite having hundreds of Tat designs, we understand that we don't have a one size fits all selection of tats to suit everyone's tastes. That's where you come in...

Here's how the process works...

You upload your image

When you choose the frame and the frame color that you want to have your Custom Design on, simply choose Customize It. Not only will you have access to all customizing features such as lens type, tat color, and prescription, but you can choose which lens you want your design on; Right, Left, or Both! See below for all the details regarding uploading your own design including size, format, types, and some legal bits that you need to be aware of.

We convert your image... by hand

Graphic Reduction. No AI generated work here. Once we receive your image, we will begin a process known as Graphic Reduction on your design. This is a critical part of the SpecTats process as all images used for the lasering process, must be of a specific size with minimum specified distances between the design strokes. Details becomes too small at some point so our design team strips away bits that won't be seen or will hinder the quality of the finished design.

We make your SpecTats!

When our Design Team is done with the conversion of your uploaded image, we will send you a mock-up proof of your Custom Design for approval from you. This proof will be a facsimile of your design on the frame you ordered that includes your frame color, lens type and color, tat design and tat color you've chosen. We will approximate the size and positioning of your Custom Design so you get a really good idea of your SpecTats!.

Image Upload Requirements

Uploaded Files - Graphics yes; Photos no

The type of image matters for the creation of SpecTats. Photos are not acceptable images for the creation of SpecTats. Containing millions of colors and far too much detail, the process of converting an image to the appropriate file for a quality SpecTats result, is not a service that we offer as it can be very labor intensive.

Graphics are the preferred type of image. Think of a logo for example. Clean, minimal colors, and minimal design detail. These are far better images for the creation of SpecTats.

Note: As illustrated above, images used for the process of creating a quality SpecTats file, all images undergo a process known as Graphic Reduction in order to minimize the amount of extraneous detail that will not be seen or would impair the final SpecTats result. Through this process of Graphic Reduction, everything is converted to outlines for the cleanest result.

Uploaded File Formats

The most common form of images for digital devices are Bitmaps, also known as Raster images, and are made up of individual pixels. Think of it as really tiny 'building blocks'. SpecTats will accept the following file formats for Bitmap images; .jpg, .jpeg, .png, and .bmp

SpecTats will also accept Vector images which are typically used for logos. Vector images do not lose any quality when they are scaled up or down. SpecTats will accept the following file formats for Vector image; .ai, .eps, .pdf, and .svg

Uploaded File Dimensions

Despite the fact that a SpecTats design will be no more than a mere 20mm in height, we do require a certain size to the image that will be converted for our process. The minimum size needs to be 600 pixels by 600 pixels but must not exceed 2000 pixels x 2000 pixels. This is not only to keep the file size to a minimum for upload, but to make sure the image is large enough to not be 'blocky', which presents challenges when doing the conversion of your file.

Uploaded File Resolution

Most images for display on the computer are typically at a resolution of 72 ppi (pixels per inch). This is standard for Web resolution and is why the uploaded image must be at least 600px x 600px. Scaling an image bigger will result in a 'blocky' and poor quality which may be difficult to properly convert for a quality SpecTats design.

Uploaded File Size

Images uploaded to SpecTats cannot exceed 2mb in file size.

Important File Upload Legal Info

It is important to note that for licensing and legal reasons, SpecTats cannot accommodate corporate logos or trademarked branding, such as major sports team emblems or specific apparel logos, within our consumer-customized designs without authorized consent from those with rights to the logo. This ensures compliance with legal regulations.

SpecTats however can be made with trademarked logos if they are requested directly from the logo’s trademarked owner, or has rights to usage like the respective company’s design, marketing, or PR departments. Contact us for more information.

Custom Design Pricing

SpecTats offers you the opportunity for uploading a Custom Design* (due to designs not available through our collections) that you would like to have on your eyewear. Due to the specific nature of the creation of SpecTats, our design team must re-create the supplied artwork to not only be in a format that our process requires, but to make sure the design renders properly during the engraving. As a result of this process, there is an additional charge of $50.00 USD for setup and services for your Custom Design*.

* Custom Designs require supplied artwork/graphics for reference by you, the customer. We will handle the conversion to the format and design.
SpecTats does not offer "from scratch" Custom Design work based on concepts at this point in time.
