Gender symbols are used to describe a person's gender or sexual identity. While each symbol has its own meaning and history in the LGBTQ+ community, they're all generally variations on male or female symbols. Gender identities include the gender(s) a person has, the gender(s) they feel themselves to be, and what they would like their own gender identity to be.
Gender identity symbols are used to represent both gender identity and gender expression, and there are many variations on the most common ones. The most common icon is the male/female symbol, which actually represents both sex and gender identity. The male/female symbol has two colors inside it: blue for "male" and pink for "female." Genderqueer is represented by a combination of male/female symbols, while trans* is represented by three horizontal stripes (the asterisk indicating that trans is an umbrella term).
In addition to these gender identity symbols, there are also gender expression symbols that represent how someone may express their gender. Two of the most common examples of gender expression symbols are the transgender pride flag and the non-binary flag.
