The history of floral design is a long and rich one, full of symbolism that has stood the test of time. Some of these symbols have been around for so long that it's hard to know their origins. Other symbols are still used today, and most florists will recognize at least some of them.
For a flower to be considered a symbol, it must hold a special meaning. Not all flowers are symbols, only those with which people have associated meaning. The most common symbols are the rose, lily, hydrangea, and tulip.
Floral flourishes have developed over time to allow for a greater range of expression. They have been used by artists to replace the letters in their names, add tone to a painting, or as signatures on paintings and other artwork. Flower symbols have been used in this way since the 15th century at least. While they may be used in different ways, they all are similar enough that they can be grouped together in one category.
