The airy, flowing lines of the circle and the delicate, graceful curves of the crescent are iconic symbols of the celestial bodies. The sun and the moon have retained their powerful symbolism through many centuries, across many cultures. These symbols are associated with a variety of concepts: cycles, natural balance, connections to and between worlds.
The crescent moon is familiar in its association with lunar phases and feminine power. Its form has a long history as an icon for supernatural forces, magic and mystery. It has been used both as a symbol of good fortune and a warning against misfortune; it's been both feared and revered.
The circle is perhaps the most universal symbol for all things celestial; it represents wholeness and completeness, cycles and unity. The dot in the center represents our connection to endless energy or a higher power; it's also been interpreted as representing fullness or perfection within that completeness. It's a common shape for representing the sun or moon, either alone or in conjunction with other symbols; you'll see this shape when suns or moons are overlaid.
