The sugar skull is the most recognized symbol of Day of the Dead. The skulls are usually made of sugar to symbolize sweetness being brought back to life.
A traditional sugar skull is made by covering a meringue or marshmallow base with colored icing, and then adding features like eyes and nose with more icing.
Sugar skulls can be found in many shapes and sizes, but they're all representative of life. Other versions include chocolate skulls and marzipan skulls. The origin of the sugar skull symbol can be traced back to the Aztecs, who created them for their deceased loved ones during their month-long festival dedicated to the dead that took place around Halloween. They believed that at midnight on All Saints' Day (November 1) the souls would return from Mictlan (the underworld) to visit their families until sunrise on November 2, when they would return to Mictlan until the following year's festival.
